The experience
This is Iceland’s most popular tour and for good reason! It combines Iceland’s history with its unique geology and an exciting look at the various states of Earth’s most vital resource, water. We journey from Iceland’s largest natural lake and geysers to waterfalls, glaciers, and rivers! We will explore the National Park at Thingvellir, the geyser area and Gullfoss, Golden Waterfall. We will have lunch at a local place on the way, or you can add a visit to the Friðheimar tomato farm to learn about produce in a greenhouse and to taste their signature tomato soup. For thrill-seekers, we can add a snowmobile tour on the glacier!
Itinerary
This is our most popular tour and for good reason. By combining history and geology with an exciting look at the earth’s most vital resource, water, this tour has it all. We journey from lakes and geysers to waterfalls and glaciers observing water in every physical state, from liquid, to steam, to solid ice. On this tour we visit some of the most-known natural sights, that everyone should see.
Our trip begins roughly 40 minutes into our journey with a stop at Thingvellir National Park – a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Not only does Thingvellir represent the setting of the world’s oldest parliament still in operation, the Althing, but it is also located on the crest of Mid-Atlantic Ridge, the only place where the Ridge comes to the surface and we can see its composition. This rift has formed fissures and crevices along with Iceland’s largest natural lake, Thingvallavatn.
From Thingvellir our journey takes us to the geysir hot spring area. The big Geysir, that gave name to all geysers, has been in recent years unfortunately inactive. Its neighbor, Strokkur, about hundred meters to the west, gushes hot water every few minutes, allowing plenty of time to set up for the next photograph, or as of the early 2000s, a selfie. The best view on the sprouting geyser and the whole area is from the nearby hill, with new walking paths.
Continuing our journey northeastwards and towards Gullfoss, a Golden Waterfall, with two cascades, perpendicular to each other. This spectacular waterfall on the Hvítá River is as magnificent when partly frozen in the wintertime as it is fluid in the summer. With a bit of luck, a shimmering rainbow appears above the fall when the sun rays shine over the water mist.
